Survey practice

There was a reasonable consensus from those of us who tried to do the survey that we really ought to practice these skills before we next go back to the wreck.

As it will be beneficial to spend a decent amount of time in the water we thought it would be sensible to wait until the water warmed up a little (eg late April or May). We can therefore probably arrange a specific date at the Chatham weekend.

If anyone would like to get a headstart and do things over the winter months as well, please let me know.

I have now knotted the line on my 400ft pathfinder (well everything we didn't lay on the sailing ship in October) and a full 1lb spool of spare line at 1m intervals, which should be sufficient for the practice weekends.

If anyone has any thoughts as to location, please post a reply. In the absense of other suggestions I would probably go for Vobster.

David

We'll probably discuss dates for jumping into a quarry and practising survey skills this weekend at Chatham, so if there's anyone who's not coming and would like to be there, please drop me a PM/email to let me know your availability/preferences for the following weekends:

April (last 2 weekends)
May (non-bank holiday weekends)
June (not the first weekend as several of are in Florida and not the DIR-UK weekend)

Osama and I had a trial run at vobster last month, and I think it should work for our purposes, so would plan to go there.

We decided to go for Saturday 26 April at Vobster. (We couldn't find a date that worked for everyone, so apologies to JK & GLOC.)

On the basis of people who were at Chatham and dates I received by PM etc I think this means we should have the following (but please update as appropriate):

1. David Martin
2. Joe Hesketh
3. Andy Kerslake
4. Marcus Newbold
5. Clare Gledhil
6. Al Pooley
7. Rob Legg (if in the UK!)
8. Osama Gobarra (if in the UK!)
9. ?
10?

Bob - were you planning to come?

I will buy three hiking compasses between now and then to go on the project account.

Andy - can you bring your bag of line arrows?

David

trimix

I have five minutes between courses

Tim at Vobster is now able to do trimix fills. Those of you who are coming this weekend to Vobster and are going on the DIR UK trip the following weekend will be able to get fills while we all dive. Can you let me know what you want and I'll tell tim to make sure he has enough helium in.

Clare

Right - time to pack for Holland

For me, it all depends whether the Sailing Ship trip on 20th April goes ahead. If it's canned I'll have gas for the bank holiday, if we get to dive then yes getting a fill at Vobster on the 26th would make sense (probably 21/35).

Thanks
Joe

[Offtopic]We'll be waiting for you @ 2120

Just look for 2 purple DIR-NL hoody's and a guy with a ponytail (probably seriously underdressed for the time of the year).

Ohh, and one may be dragging a smurf along[/offtopic]

On topic Q: will you guys be making a movie of the project?

In response to a PM, I'll bump the thread and include most of the info in this post.

A number of us are meeting at Vobster this Saturday 26 April. I suggest we aim to get there for when it opens - ie for 8.30 (if you haven't pre-booked parking it may be worth getting in the queue a little beforehand to secure a space in the bottom car park).

In addition to jumping in the water and practising survey technique it will also be a good chance to think about what we want to achieve over the four days in the summer.

As my original list wasn't edited, I'm assuming the following are coming:

1. David Martin
2. Joe Hesketh
3. Andy Kerslake
4. Marcus Newbold
5. Clare Gledhil
6. Al Pooley
7. Rob Legg (if in the UK - however, I'm assuming you're abroad)
8. Osama Gobarra (if in the UK - again, I'm assuming you're abroad)
9.
10

If anyone else is coming (Bob I don't think you said one way or the other) do let me know - if you could let me know in advance, it would help planning, but we can probably adapt if people show up.

I have bought three hiking compasses, but haven't drilled any holes for pencils - we should be able to see what works with tape/cable ties. I'll also bring a reel with knotted line, tape measures, copies of last summer's sketch map and scale map of the lines.

Al has volunteered to bring some pre-printed survey sheets, but it would be sensible if everyone can bring wetnotes and pencils (I'm sure you would anyway).

Andy - can you bring your bag of line arrows?

Rob - if you're coming let me know and I'll bring the hoodie/sweatshirt left on Lamlash last summer we're assuming must be yours.

See you on Saturday

David
