![]() ![]() | The Unknown Sailing Ship As mentioned at the DIRX gig we have the opportunity next year to try to discover the identity of a 19th century sailing ship. The wreck lies in 54m off the south coast of the UK (Weymouth), many artifacts have already been recovered. So far the artifacts have included many bottles, ceramics, grape shot, military buckles etc - and probably a lot more to come. Most of this is we believe general cargo. In addition there are mill stones, copper barrel rings (for dynamite) copper pins for holding the copper plating to the hull, a large anchor and much other stuff. Much of the wreck has been destoyed by time and the bugs that eat wood, but a surprising amount of timber (for the UK) still exists, we suspect much of the wreck still lies beneath the shingle seabed. The project in 2007 will run for five days from Monday August 6th to Friday August 10. We will need divers and support divers for the whole week, ideally we need a mix of skills including video, photography, drawing and some basic archeological skills. As the wreck is in 54m the dives will be open to those who have Tech 1, Tech 2 or equivalent (must be DIR). All dives will be conducted either on open circuit or semi-closed (no closed circuit). Priority will be given to those who can make the whole week, followed by those who can make several days, but we will need both divers and support. I have started a short list for both categories at the end of this posting, please ensure that if you add your name and you end up on the project it will entail a financial commitement, and unlike a normal trip where you can just pay and not turn up, we will need you to be there if we are to acheive our goals. The wreck has the potential to be as important as the Mary Rose, and I think to uncover some of the secrets is exciting and of course the holy grail will be the ships identity. Best Andy Divers 1. Assuming I get through Tech 1 with Richard in May and 'newbie' Tech 1 is allowed; if not put me down as support! I've done the first NAS course (pool and classroom) and hope to get through the open water bit at some point in the not too distant future. |
