I've been looking at where to buy batteries in the UK for the Gavin. I'll probably just get the batteries for the short tube for now.

I think that the batteries I need are 12v 17Ah Power-sonics; is this correct? Is it fine to get these mail order or do I need to go to somewhere to weigh them? http://www.power-sonic.co.uk/uploads/files/PS-12170.pdf

Also, what charger do I need? Will I need separate chargers for the short body and standard body battery packs, or can I get one now that's appropriate for both?

I'd like to say that the reason I'm asking this on the forum is so that others can enjoy the shared wisdom; however, in reality it's because I forgot to do so until we we'd broken down the stall and packed away the pens!

Those are the right batteries. I got mine mail-order from PowerSonic. I also bought the 33Ah at the same time as they do a discount for larger volumes (I was ordering for 2 people). I haven't actually weighed the batteries, but I have had to add lead, if you want I could weigh the extra lead tonight.

There is a Company out there called Battery Masters, who have very good prices, don't touch them with a barge pole. It took the threat of legal action before I was able to get my money back from them.

I got these for the 17Ah battery packs:
IDEAL POWER | AC0424A | Battery Chargers | Batteries & Power Supplies | CPC

and these for the 33Ah's:
IDEAL POWER | AC0724A | Battery Chargers | Batteries & Power Supplies | CPC

No probelms so far, but its only been a few months. My understanding is that the ideal charger works at a quarter of Ah rating of the battery. Whilst the lower powered charger will work with the higher rated battery (just take longer), the guy at PowerSonic seemed to think that using a lower rated charger wouldn't give a full charge and a correct charger would be better for the battery in the long run.

HTH

cheers,
Paul

I use and love the Mascot 9740 24V 5ah 3 step charger. I've had one now for 7 years, the second for 2 years and I just bought a third back in January.

They look bulletproof, all are still working, have never let me down, and treat my scooter batteries like a mother should treat a baby.

get your powersonic batteries from Powersonic in Wickford, Essex

Bob Clarke
Powersonic 01268 560686
Powersonic PS 12180NB - £16.82 each +£15 UPS delivery (£57.15 total delivered)

Bob will be able to tell you what is currently available. You can order by CC over the 'phone.

The price info above might be a few years old, batteries chop and change so it's difficult to keep up to date. With the PS12180 or PS12170 you will need to add a little weight for fresh water and a little more (800g) for salt. Pretty much any 17/18Ah battery will work in the short body and you can just add the weight in the nose. The standard scooters are a bit more tricky to set up.

The small Mascot charger is what you need for the 18Ah scooter. You can still use that charger for a 33Ah scooter but it will take ages to charge. You might want to get a 6Ah charger for the 33's.

I have all the info back home. Let me know if you need any more.

Bob

Paul, Bob and others thanks. I have ordered the PS12170s.

There has been a little inflation, its now £30.14 + VAT per battery plus £15+VAT shipping. Total £88.45.

I'll wait to see if I needed to buy any other parts/connectors (I hope not) before ordering the charger.
