Buying a scooter

Well I'm planning to buy a Gavin Scooter and was wondering if anyone had some advice about it?

Any suggestions on spares, what battery & charger to buy, weighting etc etc.

Appreciate any info.

Thanks
Al

Um, Yeah. Talk nicely to AndyK and BobC. I'm still very much learning about mine. The batteries I've got are crap, and so are going to be replaced. Probably with cheap chinese batteries. My Gavin is quite old, and came with all the bits, so I'm probably not the best person to ask on the charger front.

Not a lot of help I know. Sorry

J

Al: Fly to Philippines do some awesome diving, I'll show you how to use it. Most importantly I'll do you a deal on a brand new Gavin (GI has just given me the go ahead to be a supplier) and you don't have to pay VAT:D

I have had a Gavin for 3 years and haven't need a spare yet - however if you are heavy handed you might want to get some spare pitch yokes and screws.

Hi Graham,

Now there's an offer! If Lanny's comments were anything to go by it's worth the effort. However I reckon I might not have any money left for the scooter .

Reliability sounds good though, thanks for the info on recommended spares.

Cheers
Al

Placing an order

OK I'm gonna order the scooter. Any last suggestions on recommended spares other than spare pitch yokes and screws?

Thanks
Al

Ooooh a scooter thread! I like scooter threads!

Yoke and screw would be a handy spare to have (the yoke is what broke on Clare's). Ask George to send you a couple of spare prop blades, he'll probably throw them in for free. Also, ask for the Arnold Jackson clutch (WKPP clutch), he'll probably send you the standard Mako one for free if you ask.

IMO you must replace the relay with a modular one once you get it. I have all the bits to do this, or I can do it for you.

Batteries - don't get "any old batteries". Get the Powersonic PS12180, they are nice and light. If you get heavy batteries you will find your scooter is negative in fresh water. The Powersonics should be about right and you add weight for salt water. I've just ordered a set and weighed them. You can get the Powersonics from Powersonic Europe in Essex (01268-560686) about £19 each plus shipping and VAT.

There's not much else you will need in the way of spares, but if you are using a scooter regularly you will find that you need to carry some spare bits and bobs for running repairs (trigger wire for example)

Download the manual from the website and make sure you read it thoroughly. Most of what you need to know is in there.

Let me know if you need anything specific.

Good luck and happy scootering!

Bob
