| GUE Instructor Site Admin | Video camera/housing Taking a deep breath and looking to buy a video camera and housing. After taking advice, I want a simple housing capable of 75 mteres or so (like the halcyon ones), and a digital video camera which can be used with wide angle lense. Anyone got a set up they want to sell? Needn't be UK based - happy to pay international delivery.

| Doing It Caverkevin | I would take a look at the Gates housings. I love my PC-350. Great video and super easy to use. The wide angle lens is very nice. It is a acrylic dome that costs about $65 USD. So it is inexpensive and easy to replace is scratched. Silent Submersion has a really nice camera mount that will fit the camera to the gavin too. KLJ |

I do (Sony VX1000 c/w Amphibico VH1000 housing) but it's NTSC so I'm guessing that won't be of any use to you. After taking advice, I want a simple housing capable of 75 mteres or so (like the halcyon ones), and a digital video camera which can be used with wide angle lense. (aka, the broadcast standard in use in the states. We use PAL, but it only makes a difference if you plan to output the video directly to a TV as opposed to encoding it with a pc package). PS. Off to scout out budapest tomorrow and currently 'relaxing' with some very nice red plonk. Last edited by EBT; March 16th, 2006 at 01:06 AM. |

It's supposed to be launching first from Sky (BSkyB - our satellite TV provider) in 'Spring 2006', but the launch date has not been announced yet. There have been HD-ready TVs on sale for around six months now (all 720p - I haven't seen a 1080i one yet), but about the only HD signal I know of you can feed them yet is from an XBOX 360. The in-store demos look good though. But back to the topic... I'm not planning to buy a video camera right now, but I am interested in learning more about them, and about housings, camera lights, how to make best use of them (e.g. Auto vs manual White Balance) as discussed on other threads recently. I did the PADI UW Video speciality (three-days) a few years ago, and had a lot of fun editing the result into a finished product, but I've not done anything else with video since. So, how about some hints for where relative video newbies like Clare and me to go educate ourselves? There's some superb sites about this sort of thing for digital still photography (I learnt tons from http://www.luminous-landscape.com/ and http://www.dpreview.com/ among others), and some great magazines. There must be similarly good sites for video - probably even underwater video. So, from the experienced ones please, where do we start? What ones were good (and which ones were a load of rubbish)?
