Hello to everyone. My name is Jim Veach. I will be on the SCAPA 2008 trip. I plan to book my flight to Kirkwall Airport soon. I am looking for suggestions on where to stay, Kirkwall or Stromness? Anyone want to suggest a hotel? I would like to check out some of the land sites for a few days before getting down to diving.

Sincerely,
Jim Veach

If you're looking for somewhere to stay before the trip (and want to stay on Orkney) I'd suggest Kirkwall. It's slightly bigger than Stomness and I'd expect we'll have enough time there during the week as its the main port for the liveaboards.

In terms of things to do:
get a car and see the scenery
visit Skara Brae (remains of a neolithic village)
visit Kirkwall cathedrall (really a big church) and the Italian Chapel (a Nissen Hut converted by Italian PoWs in WWII)
specific outdoor activities: rock climbing, bird watching, walking

I would expect we'll go to the museum at Lyness on a surface interval, so you may want to leave that initially.

Probably worth a couple of days, if you're expecting to have longer, it may be worth trying to spend some time elsewhere in the UK, according to flights.

David
