G'day DIR

G'day All,

I'm just starting my exploration of DIR diving. I started with PADI, switched to SSI and now i'm looking to join the DIR team. I like to train harder than i play and practice a lot. I played ice-hockey for a long time and have worked as a professional trombone player so i have learnt the value of training to increase performance.

I saw that Australia has its firt DIR instructor in Sydney, so i'm keen to meet them and begin the DIR courses.

I'm currently in the process of changing my equipment. My current rig is a mess and needs to be seriously overhalled. I'm looking at a Dive Rite Harness, plate and Rec wing to be used with singles and sometimes with doubles. Opinions? How does Dive Rite gear compare with Halcyon?

Thanks to ALL the established members and i'm looking forward to improvong my diving to a safer and more comfortable level.

kind regards
Dave

Hi from sydney welcome to the board heaps of info here and a few resident GUE instructors. Liam is the instructor in australia his shop is dive centre bondi
I think most bp's are the same only wieght ss or alu is diff but as for wings u want the right one for the job wich means a smallish 30lb for singles and larger for doubles. I wouldn't try to use one for both. I haven't used Dive rite but am very happy with a haylcon eclipse single and old style explorer 40lb for twins. They are a really simple design inflator and one rear pull dump.

Both of mine have had a lot of use only thing i have done to them is pull apart inflator occasionally and fill with lube.
good luck i think there is a pretty sizable dir community in melb if u need help with anything

Dave,

welcome to the board. I'm also based in Melbourne and dive most weekends - so happy to catch up for a chat some time. I usually dive out of Portsea, so if you're heading down that way PM me.

You'd definitely be in good hands if you decide to do some training with Liam in Sydney. Also, you may not be aware that there is a GUE instructor in Melbourne now - Steve T. Steve and Liam did a presentation together at the recent OzTek conference.

Cheers,

Nick

Hi Dave, and welcome. The way the Rec wing from DiveRite is cut (it tapers considerably, it´s wide low down and thins out towards the Divers head) means that you MAY have more trouble trimming out properly than with some other wings. Try before you buy is always good! HTH
