Hi All

Who am I?
I live in Cheltenham and currently dive in a DIR team with Fraser and Clare. We all did our Tech-1 course together in 2005 and tend to dive off the South Coast.

Why did I choose DIR?
I learnt to dive back in 2000 and spent several years really enjoying diving. August 2002 and things take a different turn (if your squemish don't read this paragraph)! I was on holiday in the red sea just packing away kit from my last dive of the week when I slipped on the wet boat deck. Unfortunately I reached out to steady myself and put my left arm through the window in the saloon door. As I was falling I had the misfortunate to bring a lot of weight down on my arm which met the broken glass. I sliced through my wrist and in all I took out 1 artery, 2 nerves and 5 tendons - pretty spectacular by anyone's standards.

So what's this got to do with DIR. Well I was off work for three months and honestly thought I might not dive again. My attitude to risk had altered and I started thinking if I was to dive I'd really need to think about how safe I was. (Done the odd dive where looking back it was a bit hairy). Did a lot of reading on the internet and found the WKPP website. I found the principles of standarised kit, redundancy and team work very appealing and got very interested.

I don't know if anyone else saw DIR as a means of diving safer but at the time its how it came across to me. (Of course any training that improves your skills and makes you more prepared is beneficial.)

I managed to get on the DIR-F course back in 2004 and really had the wind taken from my sails. While it was quite depressing at the time the amount I learnt was massive. I have since gone on and passed Tech-1 in 2005.

I'm totally convinced that GUE/DIR is the way to go. It really has opened my eyes to a totally different level of diving and I'm having a blast!

Thanks
Al
