Evening,

If the skipper asks you to bag up as soon as you hit bottom on lets say a drift dive and your spool doesn't have enough line, whats the GUE procedure on this?

Reel? if so which one,

Cheers,

Dan

Okay. I was taught not to answer a question with a question, but there is one which is crucial to answering yours

How deep is the drift dive?

TBH I would be doing a drift dive more than 30m because it is a waste of Helium If you need to do a 30m drift dive, then I would use a 45m spool which will have plenty of give to take into account the running current.

Hope that answers your question.

Ok then,

Is there any situation where you would need to bag up from depth?

yes, if the skipper absolutely insists on it. In case I would do as I was told, probably use one of our pathfinders to do the job.

Yes there are times when the skipper says that you must bag up from the wreck. Iin which case you would use a reel. It is the same one which you would use for line laying such as a Halcyon Pathfinder 400 (400ft) or the Salvo equivalent.

You do not carry another reel such as one with a ratchet for use with bagging up. The reels above have a friction knob on them, which is all you really need to lock the reel off on stops.

Hope that provides a more sensible answer for you

They are only a pain in the arse for bagging up as they free run and you have to control the friction with your fingers. Practice makes perfect No worse than people saying spools are a pain in the arse because they haven't practiced with them.

Really? I have always been taught to stow the reel by clipping it off with a double ender on the butt-ring of the one piece harness.

Depends - some people have a hard time reaching back there unclipping it, and also it could make for a nasty line entanglement hazard. I've done it both ways - clipped to the butt ring and waist and now prefer it waist clipped as I have found that the reel interferes with stage leash when pushing it back. I believe this issue was brought up within GUE as well after the Brittanic video where divers did have it clipped off to the butt but that it would interfere with towing multiple scooters, hence the waist position.
