Official GUE procedures update

Hi,

This from the Quest mailing list:

Hello All,

The last few weeks have been very exciting at GUE. We had an excellent group
of qualified instructor candidates representing ten different countries;
this was followed by a very successful GUE conference. During the last
couple weeks the training council was able to meet on a range of procedural
issues. I have organized these on the GUE website for those of you that are
interested. I would be happy to entertain any questions on the list for
those of you that want additional clarification.

What does everyone think about the changes to the valve drill?

I actually like the change to the valve drill, and at least they havent announced the adoption of that daft S drill change

carrying the smb in the left pocket is going to be a new one for me though. Previously I carried "stuff im going to use" in the right pocket, and "stuff I hope I dont have to use" in the left.

ah well

Likewise, divers practicing the s-drill should hold the donors long hose while the light cord is organized and the hose stowed.

Standardized equipment placement for diver’s pockets
While it is understood that arguments might be made on all sides it has been
agreed that the diver’s left pocket will hold “utility” equipment while the right pocket should hold “safety” equipment. This convention allows divers to become familiar with placement which will best serve them in all diving scenarios. For example, a diver using a scooter can access “utility” items while scootering. Utility items include but are not limited to a primary SMB, double end clips, stage carry loops, jump spools etc.; safety
items include a reserve SMB, spare mask, safety spool, wet notes etc.
Looks like I will be deploying my backup SMB more often than my primary

Gavin, I also noted that and I think it is as Clare originally posted with all the subsequent follow-up comments holding true ie why change something that does not appear to be broken, nor does it enhance the individual skills whilst 'relying' on another team member to do something which they should be able to do themselves.

same here..

This change does seem to benefit the scooter diver the most - fair enough - the right hand is in use, therefore the left hand is free to navigate past the stages and into the pocket.

Edit: who will be deploying while scootering (I know - plonker Rodney). So the scooter is parked and the right hand is then free.. (?)

For those who are not diving a scooter - this is adding complexity. My right hand is free to go to my right pocket and get out my wet notes or smb.. Changing over to the left to where the stage(s) is - IMO - just adds to task loading.

Thats how I see it. Please tell me I am wrong..

I typed exactly what you had summised above and then deleted it! This definitely seems to be geared towards scooter diving and the issues of getting into the right pocket, but surely you don't go into the pocket while you are scootering, you park, let it drop, reach into the pocket and get the kit out. Getting into the left pocket with stages on, scootering or not, is much more difficult and will take some practice to get right.

Looks like DUI will have to change their standard pocket design as the right pocket is traditionally much smaller than the left and is not big enough for spare mask, blob, wetnotes...

...but your wetnotes will still be in the right pocket

It's your primary SMB that has moved, wetnotes look like they are classed as safety equipment and therefore live in the right.

Here's a thought too - if it's more hassle to get at the left pocket due to stages, deco bottles, etc then doesn't it make far more sense for that to be the pocket that holds the utility stuff? You want anything safety related to be easy to get at quickly.

Getting the SMB out of your pocket shouldn't involve a lot of task loading - there's no real rush to do this.

Just my initial thoughts...
