![]() | Ok guys, what technique would you recomend for sending up a bag, when using the primary for inflation. I.E. which hand would hold the spool and bag, which hand would hold the reg and purge? I've seen the 5thD dvds which show the technique for oral inflation, and they recomend keeping the spool and bag in the right hand to allow for bouancy adjustment with your left hand I have no problem sending up a DSMB but, would like to know the recomended DIR technique. Cheers Dave ![]() |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | This is possibly getting into hair splitting territory...I'd be inclined to say that either way round would probably work. I'd normally hold the spool in my left hand and the reg and DSMB in my right hand. [I actually normally orally inflate, but since you need to remove the reg for access to the mouth its very similar in terms of items to hold.] I don't think I've ever seen anyone do it the other way. There are a couple of reasons in my view which make this slightly better than vice versa. I'm right handed; holding and manipulating two items is harder than one, so I'll do this with my right hand. The hand I normally take my primary reg out with is my right hand. The primary reg hose feeds from the right, if I have the spool in my left hand it will not cross the primary reg hose, if I have the spool in my right hand it will. I'm not sure I see the advantage of holding things the other way around for buoyancy control. My buoyancy control should be sorted before I start to inflate the DSMB. If I'm using two hands, I'll need to pass whatever's in my left hand into my right hand, I can pass a spool as easily as I can pass a reg. Equally, if I'm holding the spool/DSMB in my left hand and haven't yet got anything in my right hand I can pass the items between hands as needed - it's a frequently used and very simple skill. If I'm assembling a bag on the ascent or moving up from a deco stop with the spool still running out, I'll have it in my right hand so that I've got the left for buoyancy control. For the majority of the ascent I'll have the spool in my left hand and wind in with my right hand, usually with a double ender [possibly this makes the left hand feel the more "natural" one for the spool when deploying?], when I need to deal with buoyancy I'll pass the spool to my right hand (and clip off the d'ender as needed). So I'd see passing the spool between hands as a standard part of using one. David |

| GUE Instructor/DIRX Moderator | Cheers David Clipping Primary - Nope. Unlooping long hose - Yes from behind the neck, if using the reg to inflate. HTH JWould you clip of the primary first, whilst deploying the spool and bag, prior to inflation? Would you unloop the primary or have it still round the neck? Cheers Dave

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I can't think why you want to clip off the primary. It's in your mouth or in your hand to inflate the DSMB. If I'm oral inflating I would only move the reg a short distance away and would not unloop it. I need to remove the reg to have access to my mouth so just need to move the reg enough to move it out the way. If I'm using the reg to inflate the DSMB I'd unloop the reg and bring it forwards (I'd also switch to my backup reg). By bringing the reg forwards I can see what I'm doing with all items and keep the line well away from me. If you don't unloop the reg you'll have the DSMB and line really close to your mask which is just asking for the line to catch your mask and pull it off. You also probably won't be able to see what you're doing. David |
