| New Member | Basic question: Instrumentation Ok, I have a basic question regarding viewing of my instruments on a dive. I wear either a depth guage or a Vyper on my right arm, on my left arm I have a backup timer. I do not yet use a compass as it is unnecessary for my current dives. My question is this. When I place my right arm instrument on my forearm, it is uncomfortably out of my line of sight. I have to wear it rather far down my arm so that I can see it in my normal range of vision if I am diving with my arms in front of me (usually on ascent). Have others found this as well, or do you simply leave it higher on the arm and glance at it from time to time with a head turn? Thanks for your thoughts. -P |

| GUE Instructor | When placing your depth guage on your right arm consider a scenario when you need to ascend with an unconscious diver. You will be behind the unconscious diver, and your right arm will be reaching in front of the victim in order to hold their regulator in their mouth and keep their airways clear. As your left arm will be busy controlling buoyancy and locking the unconscious body to yours, you probably won't be able to see much there. So, your depth guage should to be placed in such a way that you have a clear view of it even though your arm is reaching around the victim, ensuring that you can manage a smooth and controlled ascent despite the rather dire circumstances. Personally, I wear the guage approximately 1/3rd of the way up to my elbow, pointing "inwards", but everybody should figure out the details of this placement for themselves. |
