Red face Line laying and retrieval with scooter

After taking the P@*S out of a GUE standard

"Be able lay and retrieve line whilst scootering"

thinking it was clearly a typo as it must be impossible to retrieve line 'whilst scootering' and having had my ignorance remedied on this list, I tried it on Tuesday.

It is in fact relatively easy (and fun) as was intimated here, with the forward momentum off the diver/scooter keeping sufficient water friction on the line to keep the line under control.....if your quick!

couple of things I noticed,
  1. The reel had to be held correctly (line facing backward) or the line spooled in on one side of the drum much more easily than when swimming/reeling.
  2. Any delay in reeling in the line means it gets slack enough to get caught around stages! (which gets worse if the line isn't held out to the side or down!)
  3. Cylinder valves can be rolled on/off by the constant start/stopping.....
  4. Buddy needs to be on the ball, pulling ties ahead before you get there; things happen really fast!
All in all a fun exercise when stuck in a boring quarry.

After doing my scooter course with Tyler Moon this winter. I still have no clue on how to reel in line while driving a scooter. It was always stow the scooter, then reel in the line.

Sounds like you are on and off the trigger alot. That is hard on the scooter and batteries. I can't see why I need a scooter to pick up a gap or the primary reel. Are they not for travelling long distances??

This is just myself talking here. I find having a double ender on the handle of the nose and using that to park the scooter for a few seconds to be much easier and well controlled. The other option we were given in class was to just hand the scooter for to a buddy while doing the 'reel' work

Best!!

I'm not really the person to advise on this, it would just go down he INTERNET speculation route and could end up at entirely the wrong destination!

You are right, it does mean frequently coming off the trigger and the bit that surprised me was that GUE seem to be advocating letting go of a live scooter whilst playing with line....not the best combination, perhaps thats why it's in the advanced course's.

It works fine as the scooter remains out in front (momentum sees to this) where it can be seen but it isn't being held and it isn't pinned.

I also agree that this is probably an infrequent activity given, as you point out, that scooters are for traveling long distances......but I'd rather a hear a bit more from someone trained to this than speculate further.

Cheers
