Anybody else got bouyant bones?

Yes that is the question.

As an example if I lay in a chlorinated pool on my back breathing gently but with full lungs, I can float and read a small book (just!). Ideal when I was a competitive swimmer and waterpolo player, but not so good for diving!

The down side for diving is that I need extra weight to sink.

I am 6 foot and 165 lbs (or 1.83m 75 kgs) so not a complete porker.

Now it would be nice to carry less lead to/from the boat but it just isn't going to happen.

Anybody else with bouyant bones?

Most people float with full lungs - in my experience how much lead you use is a function of a number of factors - not least how relaxed you are and how empty your lungs are. I am 192 and 205kg (ie plenty of displacment ) and I don't seem to use as much lead as others (12L Euros, 300g polar tec, 300g waist coat al plate and explorer 13.5 - no extra lead - in ally 80s I use 2kg)

See you are my point!

When I did my fundies Rich Walker was quick to point out that I could loose some lead. Then whilst holding 6m stop, no air in the wing shrink wrapped in my drysuit, and stationary I am sure I heard him giggle!

I am just going over to my winter gear now so when I do my weight checks on my twins I'll post what happens.

I should be relaxed on a dive as my SAC rate runs between 9 L/m and 13 l/m depending on currents distractions etc.

205kg that is like 452 pounds. You don't need any weight with 12l's. I am impressed!!

Cheers!!

Martin - you are normal
I'm the same height and weight and also float with full and even partially full lungs.

Now, "extra" is a relative concept. I need less lead than some of the people I have dived with over the years with fairly similar body type.

At the end of the day, you need what you need and you should look at a better distribution of the weight - cylinders, canister, backplate, v-weight etc. for a more comfortable in-water position.

Best,
John.

Hey MArtin,
You are pretty light! You might consider adding some cake to your diet!
