New videos

Hello,

I'm still learning how to put films together, and struggling with my outdated computer hardware and software of course, but I think that with each movie I'm improving. Your feedback is needed and welcome!

The ones I like best are "out of the sun" and "Return to Somaya".

Sorry no wreck dives so far, though I've got some wreck footage which I am working on now.

Very nice stuff!

There is particularily one thing I think you have nailed pretty good: the length of each sequence. Most people editing video at our level tend to make each sequence a bit too long, probably because of the lack of enough material to choose from. If you look at ordinary television broadcast and actually count seconds for each sequence, it often averages at 3-5 seconds. Simply using more than one camera angle when shooting at the same thing gives some "action" and life to the edited film. A friend of mine from the days in the army made a 40min film from more than 30 hours of raw tape. A LOT of work, but the result made me question why I left the armed forces

Wow. Having ben offline a bit that was the perfect return to reading the board - thanks! I love both sequences, the diving looks amazing. The first scene in the Somaya sequence reminds me so much of one of my first Red Sea dives up shallow on the reef to the west of the wreck at Yolanda. The wonderful colours, great fish, lovely reef. And does it *really* say 55m at the end of the movie? With that light it looks more like 10m! Wow....

As soon as I scrimp and save some money again into next year I really must come and get some of this amazing diving you're showing us.

The only thing I can think of to critique in terms of the video production side is something a friend of mine who does pro editing mentioned to me a while back - can you move the scene cuts to match the strong beats of the soundtrack? Where it's a continuous sequence and different angles it doesn't make so much difference, but where either something happens and you want to emphasise it with the soundtrack, or when you're cutting from scene to scene, putting the emphasis/cut on a strong beat is I think very effective.

It does however require hours of tinkering around with shot lengths which could be better spent shooting more footage :-)

Hi,

Thanks for watching!

As I said I am rather challenged hardware & software-wise. I try as best I can to keep things in line with the soundtrack but as long as I am unable to efficiently review the files in real-time it's kind of hit-and-miss.

I am hoping to eventually be discovered by a rich producer who will sponsor me with a no-strings-attached 4GB powerbook

Don't we all The comment was really just to try and find *some* feedback - the videos are awesome and worth watching many times. I look forward to the next ones!

Browsing back some older posts I found the video AG posted of the four Abu Nuhas wrecks, which is making me very envious indeed. I've only dived two of the four and the Carnatic in particular made a great impression as it looked just the way shipwrecks look in my imagination - still showing the beautiful lines of a stately sailing ship. I love the idea of being able to do FOUR of the wrecks in one dive!
