Finning and buoancy control exercises

Guys,
I have been on your site for a couple of days now!!
Fantastic, I like it a lot , many things I read about, are things, I was missing in the system I was thought.(or am teaching)
I have always been intersted in exercises that give me more control, perfect skills, fin work etc..I used to jump into the pool by myself and practise backward finning, inventing my own buoancy execises, doing skills in midwater etc......Other Instructors and Dm´s would look at me if I were...

can I find something about fin work, buoancy control exercises or skills.
What kind of skills do you guys practise?..so far I have not been able to find more specific details!
Thanks!!

Have a look here (5thD-X Home Page - training@5thd-x.com) and then order a copy of their Fundementals DVD to see what should be done.

After that, find 2 like minded buddies and fly in a GUE instructor to take your Fundies class Or take a holiday in the UK and do a class here!

What Gareth suggests is perfectly viable - flights are so cheap now. Someone like John Kendall who is a GUE Instructor on this board would happily fligh out to teach a course I'm sure flights to spain are so cheap now - it would add next to nothing to the cost.

In fact he'll teach a course anywhere: Mogadishu, Baghdad, Kabul, Chechnya. Its a little known fact that he is actually the official GUE Instructor to the Axis Of Evil

Oi! That's supposed to be a secret

Seriously though duskdiver, If you can find 3 or 4 people who want to do a Fundies course then I'm happy to travel to you to teach it. (Or I've got spaces on some courses at the moment in the UK and Finland)

Thanks

John

Think it might have been AK suggested this one during fundies - clip a lit backup light to your front crotch D-ring and use that as a reference for your centre point to practise helicopter turns. Looks a bit dodgy in profile but the method works! Also useful as a gauge for how far you are off the bottom, keeping the light just out of the silt but not too far away, and if you're that close to silt it really shows up any stray hand waves or downward fin kicks, and notices badly if your trim is off or (my big sin recently) your knees are dropping.

Midwater ascent drills seem to be the other killer for me and my buddies and one of the more punishing things for buoyancy and finning. Keeping position as a team and keeping steady and nicely trimmed whilst ascending. Needless to say we're nowhere near there yet!

These might be a bit advanced but good for bouyancy control practice are the following three exercises (taught to me by Fred Devos)

1. Stick a pencil in the ground (or prefereable slightly off it, eg a ledge) then place a finger lightly on the tip of the pencil and try to hold station without moving postion (you can gently fin foward and back to correct).

2. As above, except keep your nose resting on the pencil (this is quite a bit more difficult).

3. find some smallish pebbles/rocks and try to balance them one on top of the other using one hand. If your bouyancy and positioning isn't spot on its very easy to keep knocking your pile over.

HTH
Joe

Oh, Joe, cool ideas! Thanks for sharing them. Great ways to enliven an possibly otherwise rather drab local ramble.
