![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | 4 divers lost in Red Sea Hello, Terrible news - 4 divers have been lost at sea, off elphinstone reef near Marsa Alam. A group of 5 divers, a Russian instructor named Elena Sundukova, with 3 students, 2 russian and one dutch, along with an Egyptian guide, failed to return to their boat after a dive on Elphinstone. We know that they surfaced but were carried away by currents because one diver managed to swim to shore later that night, and was able to describe his experience. Efforts to find them were hampered by high waves. The divers have been missing since January 6th, and although some search efforts continue, after four days at sea the chances that they survived are now nil. The instructor, Elena, kept a blog. Her last post, which I have translated below, contained what seemed to be a sense of premonition: Quote: Today I will finally see the sea again, which will smell of salt, wind, sand - and the cold of winter. Finally I will not only travel on it but dive in it, again I will become water, a bird - and I will remember the feeling of gliding above the abyss. The lost diver's names are:I have to admit, I am worried for my students: Did I teach them everything, did I explain everything, will they be able to deal with any situation? ..

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Unfortunately I believe the search at sea has been called off now and the authorities no longer consider finding them alive as a possibility. Let's hope they are just somewhere safe yet to be found but I don't think hopes are high. |

| cave deprived and Kissed | Very sad news ... Elphinstone can be hell ... The first time I dove it in 2001, we almost got killed with my buddy. Waves were 2 m high and we were stupid enough, not only to dive, but we were also not cautious enough and got washed on the reef. One sailor came to pick us up in the Zodiac, the Zodiac was flipped upside down, was washed on the reef and he got almost killed too. We were like in a washing machine and out of pure despair, we were able to flip the zodiac back, grasp the sailor and drift back to the boat which had at that point also to pick up the other divers. While we were in that hell, the only thing that counted, was to stick together and help the other one out. We did not realize that it was so bad. Once back on the boat, we saw the huge waves breaking on the reef, my buddy, the sailor and I wept like babies. I need to thank the crew and the captain that did everything they could to bring us safe and sound. They did not want us to dive that day and we should have listened to the expert egyptian sailors, instead of listening to the french divemaster.
