DIVER magazine - DIR language course

Hi everyone,

following on from the DIR X gig and the forthcoming article I'm researching for DIVER magazine, I'm interested in the sort of language that goes with DIR. You know the sort of thing, what exactly is a Fundie, a Woody and what does it mean to be de-stroked?

I'd appreciate posts on the thread with all the DIR terminology you can think of, I'm not going to say much about what the article will look like, other than to say, I had an extremely positive day with you all.

best regards, and thanks in anticipation,

Brendan O'Brien

Sounds like golf. I can't say those are words I recognize...
With fundie you probably mean Fundies which is the GUE-Fundamentals course. For the other two.... I have no clue.

I think that mentioning strokes, in what ever form, will discredit the article, assuming you are trying to paint DIR in a good light. There's plenty of historical info on the web and thankfully, it seems, the world has moved on.

A woody is a little loop in the bight of line on your reel that helps one release it more easily. I am sure some-one must know who invented it and can supply a picture.

A woodie is a small loop at the end of a larger loop on your reel or spool. It helps pull off a placement/tie.

Can't say I've heard any DIR diver use the word destroked - you must have made that one up Brendan

How about the words that matter - starting with Team

You can also try:

Basic 5 - the skills needed to form an S drill

S Drill - Safety drill - sharing gas with a buddy

Minimum Gas - the amount of gas required to get a diver and a buddy up to the surface from maximum penetration or depth.

Balanced Rig - weighting yourself correctly so that you can comfortably swim up your set if you have a wing failure.

Deco on the Fly - deco whilst swiming at a fixed depth rather than on formal stops.

Ratio Deco - taught patterns in deco which allow divers to calculate decompression obligations themselves in some circumstances.

Situational Awareness - proactive management of kit, enviornment and team in a way which seeks to deal with problems before they happen.

Language is funny though. Last month I dived with divers from Australia, Russia, Singapore, Portugal, Uzbekistan, America, Germany, Italy, Japan, Sweden and Canada. We all spoke the same language underwater

You see me a jacket, a reel and an octopus and I'll raise you a wing, a spool and a longhose

There's a straight woodie and an offset woodie.

That's not exactly DIR talk but comes from the florida cave community as does a lot of DIR stuff, the name comes from the guy credited with the invention and afaik he was not related to anything DIR or hogartian??

What i noticed about the language in our little DIR community in denmark is that dives are no longer a 33m or 36m dive.. they are 32% dives or 21/35 dives.. but gasses are not 32% or 21/35 they are 30m gasses and 45m gasses.

Caveline
A specific size braided white nylon line used everywhere on you kit from fundies to Tech 3.

I thought "Woody" was a skipper based in Weymouth, often used by the uk.rec.scuba group, who is well known for his genteel and moderate language...

Backup: The regulator hung around the neck which a diver will switch to in the event that his or her primary is donated.

Octopus: An eight-limbed cephalopod, occasionally spotted by sharp-eyed divers.
