| "Like a diver... only shorter" | Well, following on from a slightly sidetracked thread, i might as well tell you what happened to me a while ago. I dived Scapa Flow with a group of 10 blokes (brave? yes!), and got bent. My dives were silly, i put my hand up to that one right now. I got very cold on my final dive and had a shower too quick post-dive and got a skin bend, for which i was treated in Stromness chamber. Once i got home things still were not right, made the call and i got potted a further two times in Hull for Neuro/spinal symptoms. Following this little lot i got told that i need to have a PFO test. A PFO, patent foramen ovale, is a hole in the heart, and a fair portion of the population have one. For divers its pants because it lets bubbles shunt through the heart and can get you nicely bent. The test, the TEE (transoesophageal echocardiogram) is not nice, where they shove the probe down your throat to get the best image of the heart. Not looking forwards to that one! I dont like needles at all, and this seems to involve a large one in your arm I am restricted to 20m on the richest nitrox i can get until i get the test and there is a long wait for this - 4-6 months (unless i was rich, then i could pay for it privatley at £200 a throw....thats not going to happen). The ongoing saga is that i cant get signed off as fit to dive as yet due to the medical being cancelled twice now. But hey ho, shit happens (mostly to me, so dont worry).
