Dr. Wilmshurst discovered a big hole (PFO) in my heart yesterday. I've decided to get it plugged. At last I have a reason for the bends I got in Scapa.

Good to find a reason. Nw you have to decide what to do next. There's a few on here who have been through the same ride.

Doc W gave me 3 choices:
1) Quit diving.
2) Dive to 15m on nitrox - air (canadian) tables
3) Get it plugged.

I'm now referred to Mr. Morris in Liverpool for the fix.

Navigator will become famous soon enough

Great you´re having it fixed and staying in the sport, just out of curiosity, how is this treated ?

Open heart surgery or just some laserbeam "welding" ?

regards

Hello Jon,

A patent foramen ovale repair, also called a closure, is a procedure that's done to close the flap in the wall of the atrial septum (called a patent foramen ovale). During this procedure, a catheter with the Amplatzer PFO Occluder device is inserted through the leg vein up to the heart, where the device is left to close up the flap.
It takes about and hour under a general anaesthetic.

Dr Morris is great !!! and you have absolutely nothing to worry about and the staff at Liverpool Broadgreen are brilliant

Parking thats another matter ;-(

Dr Morris "fixed" me ....
BTW my dives at Scapa also confirmed my PFO

What I would say is bigger the hole less chance of it sealing properly You will go to Dr Wilmshurst for your post op tests..Then all will be revealed .

Hope it all goes well .Andy.
