Question Sea Sickness

Hi,

I am sometimes sea sick, especially when there is some swell, but never took any pills so far to prevent that.

I've heard about something called Biodramina... Did anyone of you try this? Is it really efficient? Are there so side effects? Are you using other remedies?

What is your experience?

Kind regards.

Cyrille

A site I find usefull on (Belgian) medication is: Belgisch Centrum voor Farmacotherapeutische Informatie (B.C.F.I. vzw)
using google I find biodramina's active ingredient is diphenhydramine (http://goldpharma.com/?show=search&search_srt=BIODRAMINA〈=ENGLISH). When I search the bcfi-site for this ingredient I find this: Gecommentarieerd Geneesmiddelenrepertorium . So medicines for sale in Belgium containing this ingredient can be found in several groups: in lotions and cream for external use, for use in allergic conditions (hay fever, allergic sinusitis etc) with mention of the use as anti-emetic (= anti vomit) and agains motion sickness (so this explains its use against sea sickness), and as an (old) anxiolytic, sedative and hypnotic medicine.

The last indication (same dose as the anti-allergic one: 50 mg) sounds rather worrying when planning to dive...

It also seems to be used as a sleeping pill (according to the always accurate Wikipedia). I'd probably give this one a miss.

Did you ever try Scopolamine patches? They work pretty well for me without drowsiness.

Sea Sickness

If I don't take precautions, I'll be throwing up all day at sea.

I use Primatour. I take one pill before I go sleeping, still at home. I take another pill when I wake up just before driving to the boat (a one hour drive).

Doing so has worked for me up to 1,5 meters of swell. I don't notice any fatigue or sleepiness caused by the pills.

If I have a "bad day" I try to lay down with my back on the deck of the boat, close my eyes, keep eating and try to sleep.

Trying to get some distraction also seems to work.

Good luck,

Anton

One of the guys I was in Scapa with swears by the following and has been out in big seas and not had an issue when he would have thrown up before.

2in of root ginger
Bottle of ginger beer

Peel and cut ginger root
Put into liquidiser/blender with ginger beer
Liquidise until smooth
Seive out of the solids
Pour into bottle
Drink!

Hope that helps.

stach will become famous soon enough

ginger is indeed a product that works for most people and doesn't give any side effects

I rely on Sturgeron which contains Cinnarizine. I've had no issues with it so far. It's not a perfect solution but I do feel a lot better with it than without it.

Cheers
Al

Should be Stutgeron.

Since it was originally developed to influence bloodflow in the brain it might have centralnervous sideefects under pressure, but thats a guess only.

On the boat it helped me a lot

Regards

Michael
