Hi,

For the past three years Gideon Liew and his team from Living Seas have been running a GUE sponsored dive trip to the numerous wrecks around Tioman off the coast of Malaysia. October in the South China Seas is a period of calm and warm weather perfect for running extended open ocean diving expeditions. Each year the trip has grown in popularity and and the calibre of the diving has improved from what was essentially a Fundamentals level trip in 2007 to a full Tech 1 & Tech 2 level expedition with scooters etc in 2009.

Word of these trips has certainly got around and this year the trip was over subscribed. The trip also attracted a prestigious number of GUE Instructors from around the world; along for the trip with Gideon and Leon was Thomas Jonsson, his wife Eriko and Takashi Tayama representing the Japanese Underwater Explorers (JUE); and from the UK Rich Walker GUE's Technical Training Director joined the trip as part of a four week diving tour of South East Asia.

The rest of the team was made up of the technical divers from Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand, both regular faces and some new blood, and of course the DIRdudes were there again to lend our own distinct form of credibility to the whole proceedings!

We are slowly working our way through the GBs of HD video and stills from the trip. Below are links to some of the finished video and you'll find full dive reports and research articles on our blog, with more to come in the following weeks.

We hope you enjoy these videos.

Nice footage of my favourite wreck. Looks like you had a good time. Good to see her treated with respect too.

What boat were you using as a platform?

Thank you.

We ran the expedition from the 'Black Manta' out of Singapore.

I had the wreath brought out from the Royal British Legion in the UK. It was important to all involved that this important war grave was treated with the utmost respect.

Bloody hell, it's alright for some isn't it?

Rich's luck had to run out at some point so he ended up stuck with me as his buddy during the South China Sea trip. Here are some pics of Rich at the Seven Skies wreck...

Rich

Great vids. Hope to get there myself within the next few years. In the meantime, if you do get back, tread softly, for a local boy is still on the Repulse, and still serving....

Rich's selfless evangelism, quite literally, "one beach at a time", with Asia's poor and needy, has left us all speechless and humbled

Falco,

Many thanks.

There are many of our boys still serving aboard her. It was for that reason we layed the wreath in their honor, and why we have never ventured inside.

Regards,

Richw

The GUE South China Seas Expedition 2009 also visited the wreck of Oil Tanker TT Seven Skies on the 40th anniversary of her sinking as a result of a catastrophic fuel-air explosion which tore through her holds killing four crew and sinking her in 15mins.

Read more here:
DIRDudes: The sinking of TT Seven Skies

Heres our video:

I'll post more over the comming days.

Enjoy.
