Wreck Diving - South Sardinia, Italy

Hi folks,

during my visit to Sardinia earlier this month, I had the chance to dive a couple of nice wrecks in the south of Sardinia and got to know an excellent DIR-friendly dive operation close to Cagliari: Morgan Diving Center in Capitana (15km E of Cagliari, South Sardinia): H O M E

I only had two days of time for diving in the south during my visit to Sardinia, but it was quite a nice experience. Before I traveled to Sardinia I had an email chat with Mario Rizzolo, the manager of Morgan Diving Center, about my stay and the possibility to dive on some wrecks. I visited Sardinia by air plane, so I could only take minimal diving luggage with me, but when I arrived I was happy to see that Mario's operation is very well equipped: he has several sets of D12, D18 and 40 & 80 cuft and 7l stages, as well as argon bottles.
The first dive we did was the wreck SS Romagna, 32-45 meters with 21/35 bottom and Nitrox50 deco gas - a standard Tech1 dive. The wreck stands on its keel almost evenly and is in reasonable shape for a WWII wreck. The conditions were close to excellent, only a bit of current and vis in the range of 30 meters - very nice!
The second wreck I got to dive was the wreck of the SS Isonzo, a 90 meter long warship also sunk in WWII. The SS Isonzo lies on its portside at a maximum depth of 57 meters. We used 18/45 and Nitrox50 as well as 100% O2 on this dive for deco. Again, almost ideal conditions and many things to see on the wreck as it is also in quite good shape. Great dive!

As I mentioned earlier, I had only time for two dives in the south during my visit to Sardinia, but those dives were really nice. By knowing Mario's operation from first hand now, I'm already thinking of going back there later this year or next year. It is quite easy and very convenient, you can just fly with your minimal dive luggage to Cagliari and then use the equipment offered by Mario. He has two dive boats that offer enough space for the technical diver and he runs a very professional operation, which makes it a great experience - no rush, everything is well organized and safe.

Cheers,

Stephan
