| New Member | Chasing Visibility off Anglesey Hi, Just a quick ditty on a dive last Friday off Anglesey..Myself and Chris B joined a varied group of divers for a trip off the West Coast of Anglesey onboard Scott watermans boat Endeavour...The wrecks West of Anglesey never get much diver traffic due to westerly weather systems which are common on Angleseys exposed coast..Anyway weather was beautiful and left Port Menai for a 2hr steam to dive 'Roanoak' an hour Out deep blue clear water ..fantastic ....gloating text msgs order of the day!!! however on reaching the Roanoak the water had turned a milky green !!! with lots of dead plankton ..then off further out to do the 'Farfield' fingers crossed same again bad vis...nightmare ....Mmmm Scott steamed further out again with fingers crossed as time and Alternate sites were becoming an issue We Shotted into a wreck about 16nm West of South Stack (holyhead) and the vis although not perfect had improved significantly. The Wreck is known as the Copperpipe wreck or 'Vivar' not much info on this wreck 1000 ton , Spainish, sank 1800s..thats it In we went seabed at 49m and although dark vis was variable about 5-8m ,basicaly we finned around the wreck the stern intact with rudder and prop in place ..I was struck by the lack of sponges on the wreck given the fierce tides that sweep the area.. also lots of massive congers, ling Lobster crabs continues up to collapsed bow area ..on the Stbd side big stanchions stood proud of the wreck ..not sure what they where ..not masts or derricks anyway managed to complete a circuit of this interesting wreck a few of the other divers were having a dig....Time to ascend we averaged 45m so after 30mins called it a day me on deco ,Chris shot the bag an uneventful Deco passed slowly in 11 degs back onboard the booty was getting laid out Plates, Soup tureens, platters ,cups big bowls ...We came up with two bottles one a canada dry that had been sweep onto the wreck... just my luck the China was all marked with a pictue of a sailing vessel with the inscription 'fortuna-juvat' latin anyone???????? Everyone was buzzing back onboard it was very obvious that this wreck hardly ever gets dived So in beauiful sun we headed back to Menai in flat calm seas and the mountains of Snowdonia and Llyn peninsula a backdrop it made for a great steam back in... it was One of those days that makes all the disappointment of crap dives ,no vis, blow outs all seem worth it ..A great day out Andy |

| GUE Instructor Site Admin | Nice report Andy 'fortuna-juvat' = Fortune favours us Which is a bit ironic if you consider it sank ![]()

| New Member | No No No Hi Neil ,No Chris and I never discussed taking them...The downside of variable vis it is so easy to lose your buddy,he only has to come off the trigger for a couple of seconds and your diving solo and all the probs associated with that, thing with Scooters in my limited experience is you have to heighten your awareness ten fold...there is a big difference scootering in the recreational range and one with a considerable deco obligation...wouldn't want to see my spare gas disappear into the murk plus scootering is down the list of my objectives ,would rather do a workshop first before using it in my sea dives See you Saturday Andy |
