| Padawan learner | Where do you stash your DSMB? I currently have mine held parallel to the base of my backplate with two loops of bungee. I know you can have the backplate storage pack and stuff it up the back but dosn't that poke into your back? also won't the DSMB snag on the wingnuts when you pull it out? So, where do you keep yours? Also pics will be nice.

![]() ![]() ![]() | I never liked having a SMB stored between the back plate and my back. A wise old man who pisses people off on the internet seems to agree with me about not liking anything between his back and the backplate. Yet again, he has a whole other system for drift dives and dives with current, which I have not tried yet (float boat and RIFFE floats etc...) I keep a small SMB tied to a spool ready to go in my pocket. Another large one in the other pocket which I only deploy on occasion. Mozi |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Best of both worlds ![]() I use a backplate storage pouch and keep the SMB in there and a spool in the pocket for practice dives. I don't find it a hassle to get the SMB out and attach to spool during the dive. However if I'm doing a pleasure dive I also add a second spool with attach SMB in the pocket. This is the one I actually deploy and if it all goes nipple skywards I can either get my buddy to deploy or get the spare out of the backplate pouch and use that one, which should not be an issue as it's a practiced solution. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I have both one in Backplate MC storage Pack, with spare spool in left pocket, and one already connected to the spool in my right pocket. The MC storage pack protects the SMB from the bolts and if you fold instead of roll it comes out easier. All this may change tho once i've completed Tech-1...

Nackers and Neil will be able to vouch for that on fundies I must admit that I've never had this problem, the back of the pocket should provide a snag free channel so no actual contact with the wingnuts. Did about 2 lengths of capers, finning like a b'stard trying to pull the thing out. It's right-hand pocket rolled up for me since! I suppose if the harness was really tight to the point the backplate was welded to my back it could cause a problem with the SMB being squashed between the back and backplate. However I have my harness looser than many GUE instructors would advise ![]() Daz |

Did about 2 lengths of capers, finning like a b'stard trying to pull the thing out. It's right-hand pocket rolled up for me since! I found it tricky if I jammed the SMB in the storage pack rolled up. It seems if you fold it as others have suggested it's not quite as bulky and doesn't seem to snag on the way out. Also a rather fine pair of knackers delrin knobs also provides less snag potential than wing nuts. |
