| New Member | I agree there is no reason to be offended. And yes your answer was not rude. However, the people here are trying to convey to you that buying expensive gear does not make you tech. It is just not necessary so why carry it? (DIR philosophy is omit whatever is not necessary). What makes you tech is the things you like to see under water that requires further education and training. I am curious. How many dives do you have? What kind of path do you like to take in the future? Really? Is that so rude? Why? If you guys are so technical, what are you doing fooling around with such outdated technology? Or is it really that you're just adverse to any sort of criticism? |

![]() | About 150 dives. I'm currently PADI Rescue but I'm now looking at TDI courses. I agree that you can't buy your way into Tech. I wouldn't be interested if you could. But you have to carry a computer, right? So why not get that sorted right at the start? I was trying to ascertain what computer would carry me through the whole Tech learning process. I think all I've learnt is that you guys are extremely touchy! I agree there is no reason to be offended. And yes your answer was not rude. | New Member | DIR divers do not carry computers. They carry bottom timers. I think your question has been addressed a few times now but you just don't like the answer. If you are going TDI this is not the forum that you want to be asking. Perhaps you are more at home at thedecostop. DIR divers have pretty strong opionion on the way they configure their equipment. Ok now I stop let other more experienced people talk. Anyway have fun diving. ![]() About 150 dives. I'm currently PADI Rescue but I'm now looking at TDI courses. | New Member | If you guys are so technical, what are you doing fooling around with such outdated technology? It has nothing to do with "outdated technology". It has EVERYTHING to do with not relying on a computer to tell you what to do. The only functionality that you need is run time and depth. Everything else is gravy. From there you need to posses the knowledge of decompression and what you body is doing in the water. The technology limits your ability to run your decompression the way your team wants to. A simple $200 bottom timer is all you need. There is no need to spend $1700+ on a computer that will ultimately limit your functionality in the long run. |

![]() | I'm a blend of DIR philosphy and TDI which is probably blasphemy. Both philosphies have their good points. I use an Aladin Tec2G or a Uwatec bottom timer. Recreational diving, I'm usally in computer mode. Basically on a recreational dive I could be diving with anyone, so for me computer mode is best for this type of diving. When we do deep dives, over 40mts or go down to the caves we switch into gauge mode and use a GUE Dplanner for the dive. Same as when I did my TDI trimix, it was all done in gauge mode. Then we're all uniform, all diving to the same plan, same format. As you've gathered already, you have to take into account that this site is pure DIR, that's the way it's setup, so you're only going to get DIR philosophy. There's nothing wrong with that, that what this site is for, DIR philosphy. But don't let it stop you from posting here, or looking for ideas here. cheers! ![]() ![]() | But I think in this day and age we can do a little better than a simple bottom timer. Then you'll stay wannabe forever ![]() My concern is that I'd like to start my training with the hardware that I'll be using when I finish my training. That's why I suggested bottom timer. |
