Gators?

My suit isn't the greatest fit in the world and I'm convinced I have problems with air migrating to my feet... So, would a pair of gators make the slightest difference or are they just a gimick?

Howsabout getting your suit tailored to fit? It's what I'm going to do with my balloon calves when I get back!

During a dive some air will travel past your gators to your feet and at the end of the dive you will have a big problem to get the air out. That is my experience anyway. I only used them for a few dives though.

As suggested, a new dry suit would be better (but more expensive )

Agree with Robert. If you do get air in your feet you will have a hard time getting it sorted out with gaiters.

They are a fix for poorly fitting boots normally, rather than spending the money on the gaiters you could spend it on getting the suit altered...

Or alternatively

I get on great with mine, OK now admittedly they were not a huge revelation when I tried them but I do like them.

My boots are a reasonable fit and the calf area of my suit was a bit baggy (not massively though).

I used to find that if I went head down then the air migrated into my calf area or even heaven forbid if I actually managed to trim out (extremely rare and always by accident ) it slowly worked its way into the calf area. Not a huge problem, I just used to go a bit upright and drop my legs (standard diving for me )

However since I started using gators I find going head down is not a problem and I don't have an excess of air in the lower legs, as the boots are a reasonable fit any air in the boots is minimal anyway.

Personally I like them, not a massive revalation for me and I could manage without them but I do find it more comfortable with them.

Obviously I could have opted for having the suit altered but then I would struggle to get my huge feet through the calf area. (and you know what they say about men with big feet. :D)

The gators minimise the amount of gas in the calf area and

I used gators for about 1 year with my old drysuit as it was just too baggy in the lower leg area. They made a massive difference to my comfort during ascents.

I don't really recall having problems with trapped gas in in my feet. During ascent, I would occasionally stretch out my legs and then pivot my body up to release the gas in the foot / lower leg area, no problem.

Give them a try and see how you get on. As with almost everything, it takes practice.
