Knife for the goodmand handle

I recently aquired a Tekna Xtra Edge knife for mounting on the goodman handle. Typically, its mounted on the inside, bottom part of the handle, where the palm goes.

After looking at it for a while, I thought that mounting it on the top portion, where the back of the hand is, might be a little cleaner. How are you all doing it?

How are you getting the proper tension so that it doesn't swing out unintentionally. I considered a small O-ring, maybe airspool sized, to crush between the knife and handle. I think that it might produce the required friction.

If its any help, I'm using a Halcyon 10w adjustable lighthead.

Thanks in advance!

I personally mounted my knife to the inside part of the handle, under the palm. Up here we're all diving drygloves, so the issue i saw about mounting it to hte top was getting at it with my gloved hands. What i did was drill the handle, and put in a bolt to keep the knife on, like normal. Then i took the adjustable portion of the handle off, and slid a thin o-ring on it. This o-ring slid down and went over the knife nad handle, so it holds the knife in place.

I've used it underwater before (it was the easiest thing, and i wanted to try it), so i just pushed on the knife and snapped the o-ring. The knife then swung out easily and i pulled out the knife. Then on the surface, i just put another o-ring on it.

The o-ring between the handle and knife might work ok, but the knife has a funny way of working itself out of hte sheath, so it might not help too much with just an o-ring sandwiched in there.

A thing to remember, it is a backup knife, it wont be used on a regular basis, thats what the knife on the belt is for.

Just my thoughts..

Tekna Knife on handle...

I drilled a hole on the bottom of the goodman handle (where your hand would hang on to in palm down) I attached the knife with a SS screw through the handle/ hole in the knife. Make sure that you position the knife far enough to onbe side so you can slide the o-ring off when it is time to use the knife. The knife sits between my hand and the handle. I put an O-ring that is large enough to go around the knife and handle. After checking a couple of o-rings I found one that works well. I have had my knife on my handle for close to 2 years and I haven't had to replace the o-ring. I am using a Halcyon Proteus 3 light.

Tekna knife on goodman handle

I'm just about to add the knife to my Helios handle. To be honest, I'm just wondering about drilling the hole in the handle. I don't know what the handle is made of - and whether I need to do anything to protect against rust once I drill through it. I would expect it to be pretty resilient stuff, but before I make a hole in my beloved light , just wanted to check if anyone has any experienced any problems or if there are any pitfalls I need to avoid...?

thanks!!

I drilled a couple of threaded holes in my Helios goodman handle to mount it on a camera lighting arm and they don't appear to have corroded at all with no extra treatment. One of the few bits of the light not to have had problems :-)

Not sure what the handle is made of but one problem I haven't had but which I guess could arise is if you're making any metal to metal contacts on newly cut surfaces. Wasn't a problem for me, but seems to be something that many people take a second thought about. If on the other hand you're just threading bungee through the hole .... :-)

I drill a 3.2mm hole in the handle, then thread it M4 using only the first 2 taps of a 3 tap set. The hole in the knifesheath is now countersunk and attached to the handle with a countersunk screw of the right length (cut and file to length) using a nasty grade of Locktite (green or for the really brave red). Tighten the screw so the sheath is snug and not too easy to turn.

You will probably have to fit the knifehandle to the inside of the goodmann handle using a file, the objective is to have the knife laying down on the goodmann handle over a wide area with no space in between.

If you do it right it'll take around a half hour of work, but will last for years.

Michael

The Handle is made out of Aluminium so dont worry about the rust . Its pretty easy to drill through and should not have any problems providing you wash it with fresh water after a dive. Its easy enough to put a dab of paint on it after you drill it. I painted one of mine black to comply with rule no.7 in DIR.
