What glue to use for PVC (battery pack)

Hello everyone,

I am in the process of making a battery pack for my Halcyon 10w HID (old style). I have sourced all the required parts and now I need to glue the bulkhead (PVC) to the batteries (lead acid PS1229L). This bulkhead (for lack of a better name) also serves as support of a socket for a banana-type plug. I was wondering whether there is a specific type of glue to use for this application.

On a similar note, is there a specific type of glue used for the batteries themselves? The pack is made out of 2 identical ones glued together.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Jorge

PVC cement - plumbers use it for joining together sections of PVC plumbing pipe (it actually melts the PVC allowing you to stick two pieces together.

Aruldite.

This is a 2-part glue. You have to mix the glue and the binder together first, then apply to the batteries. I've built a number of battery packs with this and it has never failed.

Thank you both for your advice.

I think I'll give a try to Araldite (seems to be the brand name here in Spain).
Never thought I would be doing so much DIYing with diving gear :-)

Cheers

You always get to a point where it makes more sense to figure out how to do this stuff yourself. Whether it's rebuilding battery packs, scooter modifications, doing your own reg servicing.

I always find it more satisfying to know that I've done it myself!
Best,
John.

Just keep in mind that if you ever need to replace the batteries, it may become dificult to un-glue the PVC bulkhead and the support for the bannana socket if you use Araldit or other glue like that.

I always use a silicone sealant gun (the one that is used to seal everyting in the bathroom) to glue the PVC bulheads to the batery packs, then using a cutter it is very easy to remove the batteries when you need to replace them and you can use again the bulkhead and the socket support with the new batteries

I'd be careful with PVC cement, it's a solvent and works by chemically melting the plastic and forming a welded joint. On some plastics it won't have any effect, on some it will... I've no idea what battery cases are made from but I wouldn't want to melt a hole in one

Hot melt glue guns are great, strong but you can remove with a bit of effort as well.

They are made from PVC as was the bulkhead - apart from fiddly little airfix bits its pretty hard to melt a hole in something.

If using Araldite, maker sure you mix it really well else you'll get patches that don't set quite right and they remain sticky (At least it seemed to for me).

Thank you everyone for the useful advice.

My plan is to make a spare battery pack, so the parts are all brand new.

I have used Araldite. Although it may seem that it could be difficult to remove, it isn't really. You can easily take off the bulkhead once it's glued to the batteries. In any case, my current battery pack still works, so I'm not planning to break it to make a new one.

In the end I got some offcuts of PVC (slab) and Polythene (disk) from a local technical plastic supplier. I have used the latter due to it being easier to work as it is the right shape.

Cheers
Jorge
