Which scubapro regs for single tank DIR setup? also DIY annuals?

I'm ready to upgrade over my old US divers micra+ adjustables w/ Cousteau 1st stage. My DIR-F instructor convinced me that scuba pro is the way to go. I'm thinking a pair of G-250's with a nice DIN- 1st stage. Or should I go R190's? I like to be able to turn down the backup so it doesn't free-flow, but I learned the adjustable 250 is another "failure point" and also to never de-tune a reg, let it breathe wide open.

Any cheap places to get new ones? I'm also going to check ebay for a used setup- I'll get it professionally rebuilt once, but then I want to get the books and tools to do it myself- I'm very much a DIY type and I'd like to save $100 a year in services.

Zimm,

I use MK25 and old-school G250 primary and R190 necklace. I wouldn't worry about the "failure point" of adjustability, but make sure you get a new G250V. Much better breather (I tried a prototype) and simpler and more robust than the G250HP.
Mk25 1st routes the long hose straight down from the top port, which is nice.
BTW, the only thing I'd "detune" on a SP reg is the venturi assist (VIVA).

And: If you don't know what you're doing, you can cause a ot of problems with DIY and life support items. In my 8 years of servicing gear I've seen a lot of hair-raising stuff caused by insufficiently trained "technicians". No offense intended.

Best,

Benji

TWINSET SCUBAPRO HOSE ROUTING

Left hand side of the page -- scroll down to see an MK25 being routed on a singles wing. Looks like almost perfect routing.

Great, but where's the drysuit hose?

Hello Zimm,

I would like to add a note of caution as well concerning self service. Like diving, with out the correct tools, training and experience you could be in for a world of hurt.

You may want to consider purchasing new scubapro regs. Last I knew they still have the life time warranty for the United States. If you purchase the regs from a authorized dealer, then have them service annually (+/- one month the purchase date) scubapro covers all the parts. You just have to pay the bench fees.

Cheers!!

Kevin

You know, I really don't like that routing for singles. On my Atomics (same routing as scubapros) I run the long hose off one of the 'standard' ports on the side. Octo in front, long hose from back, i.e. closest to tank. Doubles I run the first stage 'sideways' like in the pics, but on a singles setup I didn't enjoy that routing when the longhose is deployed. I'm sure it's just me

Steve B: The reg has enough ports to run the inflator and drysuit hoses off the left side, the hose to the secondary from the right side and the long hose from either the right side or the bottom.

Very nice routing options for either singles or doubles.

Well I've done some more research and for scubapro people are saying to wait for the new G250V that comes out this Sep. That also means buying at full retail pricing at the LDS.

There's an Apeks seller on ebay that will get me a DS4 DIN, ATX50 and ATX40 for $485. That sounds like a pretty good deal. Any opinions?

I was thinking what my DIR-F instructor told us about always having the adjustable regulator all the way open- the idea being, "why would you ever want to de-tune your regs peformance while breathing on it"?

Well if that's the case, why wouldn't I want the ATX40 as the PRIMARY since there's no adjustment to worry about, and ATX50 as the backup since that's the time to have a reg detuned so I don't have the embarrasing post-giant stride-boiling water freeflow under my chin when jumping off the dive boat?

You need to be careful about De-tuning a reg, as it's the only overpressure valve on the system. There was someone over on the Decostop who did some testing, and found that if you detune the reg it was possible to get very high intermediate pressures, which could cause a freeflow of an inflator, or burst a hose.

To avoid the freeflow when I jump in, I just point the reg downwards.

HTH
