| Chillin' with the ninjas | Salvo reflector heads The old style 10W & 21W bulbs could be made even better by replacing the standard reflector with an EKPP reflector. This made the beam tighter and more focused and therefore it was projected even further. Sticking an EKPP reflector on the new style 18/21/24W seems to have the opposite effect with an increase in light spill over the standard reflectors (which are pretty good). But I was wondering if anyone knew of any plans to develop an improved reflector for the new style bulb - something to do for the new bulbs what the EKPP did for the old ones. |

| New Member | Speaking of reflectors I still have an EKPP one sitting at home that needs a new home. Edit: The new Halcyon ultra bright reflector is a very nice piece of kit, maybe look into how they fit and work with the Salvos.

I tried one of these in México earlier this year (with a Salvo square 21W ballast retrofitted with new 18/21/24 bulb). It didn't make an appreciable difference over the EKPP head (if anything, slightly worse).Another thing you can do (tip I got from Danny Riordan) is to twist the ballast in the refelector head - even a 1/4 turn or so can really tighten up the focus. Obviously this works better with the cylindrical ballasts but you can still get some benefit with the square ballast. HTH Joe |

I think it’s because the bulbs don’t output light uniformly in all directions (due to the irregular arrangement of the filament/arc/wires/stuff), so if you twist the slug slightly you can tighten up the spot in addition to the effect of moving it in and out. I guess it shouldn’t really work as the reflector is uniform, but it seems to make a noticeable difference depending on the bulb type. |
