Since first discovering DIR I have adopted all the kit configurational aspects and even had a go at DIRF and I believe it to be a great system. To be honest though, I always had some doubt as to how necessary it was to remove cylinder boots (although i did it anyway). I wasn't entirely convinced with the arguments.

On a recent club dive I noticed one of the club steel cylinders which was lying on its side with the boot towards me. Through the slots in the boot I could see extensive corrosion which clearly had went unnoticed for sometime and on further examination of the other steels it was clear they were all in shit order and will require shot blasting and a re spray. I pointed this out to a few of the other club members and explained why in DIR we don't use boots as if I had accepted it all along. Of course I do now.
