pretty inexpensive, I'm surprised that the age is 12 and that acedemic is home study. Wouldn't expect that from GUE. Guess the need to compete with normal OW courses trumps.

It says it's a GUE course but is it?

GUE don't mention this course on their training page yet (http://www.gue.com/Training/Recreational/index.html)

No but GUE has been threatening to have their open water course out this year(there are some postings on here by GUE instrs. about it), That being said I don't think (even if it says GUE) that it IS a GUE open water.

I'm sure somebody from GUE will clear this up shortly....

There was a whole dustup about GUE's "new" OW class a while back. I remember it was supposed to be two weeks; but I also thought there was more instruction.

In my opinion, most of the academics of all classes should be home study. You don't need someone to tell you most of that stuff. You can just read it.

I also remember the price was supposed to be someplace in the $1k USD range. Isn't there a thread arond here about it?

Edit: Just had a thought (it happens). Maybe the shop/instructors are using it like everyone else in the dive industry uses OW: as a loss leader. Lower cost doesn't need to mean lower quality if they can make it up in other ways.

Looks odd indeed, price does not compute nor does several other key points. If you look under schedule you can find the same class information but under another header.

Take care

GUE Open Water Course requires....

Minimum age of 16
Eight FULL days on instruction encompassing 50 hours of instruction (both classroom and in water work).

Seems to me to be a PADI/NAUI course with a GUE tag and I would have thought that was slightly shaky ground. Terming a course DIR is one thing but I would think that GUE is a more protected brand...
