The prevention of compressed air illness.

In following up on a request on another board, we requested permission from Cambridge University Press for the addition of Haldane's landmark paper on decompression. They granted permission yesterday so please enjoy!

Boycott AE, Damant GCC, Haldane JS. The prevention of compressed air illness. J Hyg. 1908;8:342–443. RRR ID: 7489

NOTE: Permission was granted to The Rubicon Foundation, Inc and this paper should NOT be added to your own web site. Violation of this "trust" will make it harder for us to deal with this and other publishers going forward. Also, PLEASE use the database link (example: Rubicon Research Repository: Item 123456789/7489) and not link directly to any pdf in our system. This has been eating quite a bit of bandwidth and is now making a difference given the traffic we receive. Thanks for the support!

From the paper, about ways of enhancing nitrogen elimination:
Quote:
Another method which can be employed for increasing the circulation in the case of divers is to restrict the air supply so that the partial pressure of CO2 in the air of the helmet may rise sufficiently to stimulate the respiration and circulation. [This method] is used in the Royal Navy during the ascent of divers.
Must have been nice to be a Navy Diver at the time!
