![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Deco Theory and Physiology Lecture (UK) Folks, this is not a DIR-oriented lecture in anyway - but Mark Powell is giving a deco theory and physiology lecture in Nottingham in Feb. Might be of interest to some on here: Feb 24th Decompression Theory and Physiology - YD Dive Forums & Scuba Community (Apologies for the cross-posting, but given the interest in the deco threads I figured there might be some additional interest over here ) |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Just done my TDi Trimix course with Mark. I think over the course of the week we had his lecture, Thoroughly recommended.

| New Member | A slightly belated report back from this lecture last Saturday 24th Feb '07 in Nottingham, UK. It was a very well presented and informative day, and I it was interesting to have the opportunity to hear the theory and history of deco models and physiology in a little more depth than is appropriate to cover on e.g. a GUE Fundamentals or a TDI AN&DP course. I learned quite a lot of things I hadn't known before (including a very well explained session on gradient factors and how dive planning software uses them, combined with Haldane/Buhlmann multi-cell saturation models, to arrive at an ascent profile, for nitrox or trimix), as well as hearing about a fair bit of stuff I already knew, but which was presented very well and was consistent with what I've been taught elsewhere. Mark Powell not only knows the subject well and has clearly read a much greater proportion of the literature than most of us are ever remotely likely to, he has also developed an exemplary course to explain his material in a way that non-scientific people (like most divers) can easily understand. I only remember seeing one (simple) equation during the entire course - there's a lot more charts and visual representations than text, which makes it easily digestible by people who are put off by numbers or just don't want to deal with page after page of text on a Saturday morning after not enough sleep! From a DIR perspective, it was good to hear about the whole range of approaches people use for deco, including using gasses that would be non-standard for DIR diving, in order to further understand what's going on in the body. Recommended!

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I'd second that, a really interesting day with lots to think about. Even though the course was pitched at the right level for me, the draft manuscript on the CD Mark gave out goes into much more detail and I'm having fun working through that. I think I'm starting to understand what gradient factors are all about now ![]() |
