| GUE Instructor Site Admin | Mexico Cave videos Hi - someone (and I can't remember who) sent me a link to some fantastic video of Mexico caves a while ago - and I can't find it anywhere. They were on a site which had several videos - one was called wonderland I think... Has anyone got any links.... or something similar.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | There's a wonderful video clip on the Scuba Guys site (http://www.scubaguys.com) -- go to videos, and watch the one entitled "AG's cave video from the Fifth D site". Beautiful photography, and great accmpanying music. There's a short one on the Diablo Divers site (go to http://www.diablodivers.com/secondar...vern_dives.htm and click on video link) but it shows his cavern tour and the divers are not DIR. I'll be checking this thread frequently . . . I already spend WAY too much time watching cave diving videos! |

Something I don't understand from watching all these videos -- and I am not a cave diver and nowhere near getting there yet -- is that the divers are single file, but they don't seem to keep their lights out in front of the diver ahead so that diver knows where they are. How do you keep track of your buddies in that situation, if you are shining your light right in front of you? |

Being new to the cave scene but with a few years of OW experience, I found that compared to other forms of diving (with the usual ambient light available), the ultimate darkness of a cave makes it possible to move the light around (slowly of course) quite a bit more than OW environments in order to look at the cave and appreciate the scenery and still maintain light contact with the rest of the team. If things go south I found it's much more obvious when one goes from "sightseeing" to "signal" mode.Something I don't understand from watching all these videos -- and I am not a cave diver and nowhere near getting there yet -- is that the divers are single file, but they don't seem to keep their lights out in front of the diver ahead so that diver knows where they are. Of course in order for this to work one can't be in a total exclusionary bubble and ignore what's going on outside their own little world. It's all part of becoming a "thinking diver" as Chris LeMaillot puts it. Last edited by nadwidny; January 6th, 2006 at 09:47 AM. |

Single file isn't a very practical way of diving, especially where the halocline ruins the visibility. Sometimes, the cave is small enough to dictate single file.Something I don't understand from watching all these videos -- and I am not a cave diver and nowhere near getting there yet -- is that the divers are single file, but they don't seem to keep their lights out in front of the diver ahead so that diver knows where they are. How do you keep track of your buddies in that situation, if you are shining your light right in front of you? Remember that what you are seeing in video is not "real world". There is a guy behind the camera with twin 50W HID lights lighting up the cave, everybody knows they are being filmed and some shots are deliberately stage managed. The walls would normally be much darker when there are no video lights. And yes, Brian is right on the money with the moving of the lights, you do that far more in cave and it makes it far easier to kep track of the person behind. You kind of "tune-in" to people's style of diving after a few cave dives, and of course you talk about the dive afterwards. Bob Last edited by Bob Cooper; January 6th, 2006 at 11:19 AM. |
