DIR Cave Diving The roots of DIR are firmly in cave, and the hearts of most who have experienced the dark side of diving remain here.

Side mount

Hey NG,

I am new to cave diving, an as I not GUE certified ( yet ), I am curious about DIR and cave diving.
But how do DIR diver do side mount diving?
It seems odd, that every other agency ( that I am aware of ) has a side mount course, but cant find anything with GUE ( doesn’t seem as Cave 3 covers side mount diving )

Best regards

Anders Knudsen

I'm experimenting with it on a low priority at the moment...
George has written something about it in the past, but it was pretty vague and open for interpretation.
I doubt if you will find any detailed info about it here because it is considered a very specialized option that is avoided as much as possible unless absolutely necessary.

I also rarely find a situation where it would be really necessary...
We have some caves here in Belgium that can't be entered in backmount and can only be dived in side-mount or no-mount, but then I ask myself... "do I WANT to dive there???"
the passages are so small and silty that the way back is per definition in zero viz...
So usually the answer is "NO"...

My reason for experimenting with it is logistics for exploring shallow caves with multiple sumps and rather long dry passages in between...

Personally, I'd accept that sidemount diving isn't really DIR and look more towards, as the French call it, the Systeme Anglaise. I asked George Irvine about sidemount diving a number of years ago and he said he would never do any and had no experience of it. Not long after, his sidemount system description appeared -- draw your own conclusions. Most sidemount divers find it a rather unworkable and illogical system.

Duncan Price has some good info on his website www.sump4.com
