Conference meet up

In case people miss it on the original thread -

How about we meet up in the main bar of the Danubius Grand Hotel Margitsziget (the conference hotel I believe) at 8pm and decide where to go from there?

Open to alternative suggestions if anyone knows a good bar in downtown Budapest and can provide a name and a map.....

Rich Walker and I are going out tomorrow evening. We'll thoroughly check out all the seedy bars and strip joints the city has to offer and come up with a few suggestions for Friday.
Mr Lundgren has given us a few pointers on what to look for

This is an excellent idea.

What were we supposed to do on Friday again?

Dave Wallace has a spectacular aura aboutDave Wallace has a spectacular aura about

We have just arrived and are doing our duty and going out to look for those seedy places

Dont forget the hotel is on an island and about 3 miles from the city center - we may need a taxi or 10 on Friday night!

John, Rich - give us a call when you get in, .... room 149 or on the usual mobile number

cheers all - see you Friday

Liisa will become famous soon enough

So, we went for a bit of a wander last night (starting with a £8 cab fare into town).

We started here....

The "Dolce Vita". Well actually, we didn't bother going in, but it just goes to show that Budapest has something for everyone.... I did think that the ladies working there were somewhat ill-advised in their choice of attire - given the sub-zero night temperatures surely some Damart and a wooly hat would be more appropriate. (BTW remember to bring your own - it's COLD at night!)

We finished here...

The "Montmarte". Our favourite - cozy, unpretentious, local beer £1.50 per pint, Guinness £2.70. Lots of "art" on the walls, some with a mixed-gas diving connection, as this illustration of a lady breathing off what looks like a helium J shows.

Back at the hotel the bar looks grand (well, it is the "Grand Margitsziget") but not high on atmosphere, after all it's a hotel bar. Beer from £2.40 / bottle.

So lots of variety, but it''s a big city & perhaps we can elicit some advice from local conference attendees on suitable establishments?

Regards
Liisa
