Very pleased to let the community know that Brian Allen today joined the ranks of UK GUE instructors

It's been a long time since that first dive in Vobster Brian - but you were a star then so this is no surprise

I hope that you will all join me in congratulating Brian!

Lol I forgot about that, back when you'd just passed Fundy's and you, me, Lil Pete and was it Sterny??? went for a dive so we could see what all this DIR nonsense was all about

Thanks for all your help and advice. I'm really also the DIR love child of Rich Walker, Andy Kerslake, and Rich Lundgren who have been on the end of the phone answering all my annoying questions for the past couple of years - cheers guys.

Hope to get some good diving done,

Brian

Yes, welcome Brian. It's been a pleasure working with you towards your Instructor status.

I think it's great that GUE now has a resident instructor in a dive shop in the UK - this can only be a good thing and I really hope it works out!

Rich

Well done Brian. Hope this earns you your first million.

How's Doug coping with the smoking ban?

Cheers Alex! We thought Dougie (our skipper and my dad) was going to have real problems after we stuck no smoking signs all over the boat. But he was lucky to befriend a Barrister who was diving from the boat one day. Apparently charter boats are not public spaces as a member of the public is supposed to ask for permission before they are allowed to board. Therefore you can only go on a boat if you are invited, therefore it is private space and he escaped the smoking ban. <sigh>

However he's since promised to quit under certain conditions, so fingers crossed that if I keep the office clean and the shop tidy he'll uphold his end of the bargain.

How do you make a million out of diving? Start with two million...

Isn't he "at work" though- you can't smoke in any workplace, vehicles included unless it is driven by only 1 person. Mind you I'd be more impressed if you tidied up the office...

But damn you and your GUE intructoryness. I am very nearly tempted to do a fundies course now as it would be a right laugh. Except the "maintaining my ideal weight and being fit" bit.

Congratulations Brian!

You kept it all pretty secret - the shop didn't even let on where you were when I called the earlier this week...

On the subject of the smoking ban - I think the 1 driver exemption for vehicles used at work is specifically for cars - larger vehicles such as lorries are covered by the ban even if there's only one occupant. Not sure how it applies to boats though...

Also, not sure what the position would be if smoking on the deck rather than in the cabin...

David
