| GUE Instructor Site Admin | 2,000 members Gosh - that was quick. Thanks to all who contribute here, the IT boys, the MODS, and most importantly those who post. I had an enquiry last week from a diver interested in DIR who didn't know anyone locally to talk to. No problem - apart from the fact he was 8,000 miles from me in Hawii. Thanks to the world map, I put him in touch with someone local to him - and they arranged to go for a dive ![]() I can't pretend that those of us who kicked this board off imagined it would ever grow beyond 30/40 people - but it is helping make the world a smaller and friendlier place. As a celebration of hitting 2,000, we are going to start a new initiative "Around the World". The idea being that if DIRx divers are going to travel around the world the 'baton' can be passed to local divers for them to take on their dives. Hopefully the 'baton' would be photographed in different locations such as Wakulla, Baltic sea wrecks, sailing ship exped..and the list goes on. John Kendall and I are going to the spiritual home of DIR diving, High Springs in a couple of weeks time. We will take the baton and pass it on to someone else - posting a report of the dive on here. However, the difficult part has been deciding what the baton will be. it must be small enough that can be clipped off inside a pocket but also large enough to record details of the dive. We've decided on a two part baton. Ali is making an engraved shiney cave arrow for us which will easily go on any dive, and a set of wet notes will carry the log for all to complete. Hope you think this is a fun project - and will take part.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | The baton's a great idea! Wish it had existed when I ran into the British DIRX members in Monterey last October. Speaking of putting new divers in touch with DIR mentors . . . If anybody knows anyone in the New Orleans area who's DIR, let me know? There's a poor recent Fundies student who is having a heck of a time with unsympathetic non-DIR buddies these days ![]() |

| New Member | Great idea Claire, I'm looking forward to seeing the baton's! And 2000 is a great number, I'm sure we also will pass 2007 soon And I must admit that I've already met more people from this list than I expected and also in some great places. So thank you 1999 others ![]() |

| Padawan learner | It's a shame that half of the members we have on the forum here have never posted. It would be nice to see just an introduction or something like that. Good job on the ever increasing community and just to echo the thoughts of others that i like the idea of the baton.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Gosh - that was quick. I have just found the brass to make it. I will start on the arrow on Sunday. I am tempted to make 2, One from Stainless Steel and one from brass. You can send one East and the other one West. Thanks to all who contribute here, the IT boys, the MODS, and most importantly those who post. Redundant arrow - fantastic idea ![]() Just a thought Ali. ![]() Any Halcyon dealer on here feel like donating some wetnotes - the transparent pocket in the back would be perfect for the arrow ![]()

![]() | I noticed last night that I am apparently the "2000th member" (I've been labeled as such). So, I guess I've done my little part in all this, but I think this is a great idea, and I look forward to tracking the baton's progress around the world. |

| Gadevang Underwater Explorers | Hey, Congratulations with the 2000 members – this has certainly developed into a very nice forum, with a lot of very skilled and qualified divers who will answer every question you might have. As we are now in the more unserious part of the forum, I have a question. Why do my description still read “New Member” I have been a member since Dec 2005 an taken into account that the forum is not that much older it is something I have wondered if I could change. Not that important but it crossed my mind. And yes this could have been in a separate post – but in some odd way, I felt that it fitted nicely into this subject Best Regards Anders Knudsen
