Please can you show what a "longish valve core tool to snug it up" looks like?

Have you ever removed the core from an auto tire valve? It requires a "valve core tool" To access the schrader valve in the end of a hose QD you need the same tool, only it needs a longer "stem" on it.

Take your hoses to an auto tire shop. They will have what you need.
