G'day,

Use both. Make a plan with Deco Planner, check/modify with Ratio deco and then be prepaired to adjust on the fly if required.

I recommmend Deco Planner. While you pay, it also has other features that you will find you need later like Gas Planner. I have used HLplanner and V planner and found both of them both un-user friendly.

Using Ratio Deco you use your brain as the computer. It enables you to adjust on the fly if required and enables you to modify Computer or Table generated plans. I especially try to take advantages of 'Oxygen Windows' when decompressing so often shift some shallow deco into an oxygen window at 21m.

I do keep backup plans in my wet notes as a matter of course (no deco gas plans especially) and they have saved my arse a few times, even if the boat Captain chewed my arse of later for over exceeding my Run Time.

Either way, Safe Diving

I concur . . .use Deco Planner as a sanity check for the first few Pre-Dive profiles you derive with Ratio Deco. (Except just borrow your friend's computer and Deco Planner software --no need to purchase it yourself!)

For Pre-Dive Gas Planning (and Blending as well), you can easily make a spreadsheet macro program for yourself in MS Excel.

But in the "field" (i.e. a bouncing wet bangka diveboat in the South China Sea), you've got to learn how to calculate these initial values & profiles by yourself. No laptop computer; No PDA; No Pocket Calculator --just wetnotes, a pencil, and good ol' basic manually applied four operator arithmetic. . .
