When I played waterpolo in outdoor unheated pools in early April I wore a rubber swimming cap available from any sport shop to keep my head warmer (no wetsuit, just rubber trunks and bollocks that took a week to re-appear!).
It worked well.

Will be trying it soon for diving!
I have been doing this for a year now. I started it because I thought it might be warmer. Then I discovered that it held my (long) hair in place, so no tangles, and no hair under my goggles. The main reason that I went on wearing it (even though it earns me some funny looks, specially in tropical waters).
Now I am dry suit diving it also ensures that all my hair is kept away from my nek seal, and that it does not stick out from underneath my hood (which probably otherwise would result in a cold water inlet)
Can't really say if it makes a difference in temperature, wearing a cap or not with my wet suit.
