| Move the light to your right hand, illuminate the compass, move the light back to your left hand and look at the compass. If it's a decent compass and you're shining a decent primary light at it, the compass will then glow sufficiently to be usable for several minutes. It's no big deal if you need to look at the compass/light as you point the light at the compass, but you'll find that the amount of light reflected back off the compass is quite significant and you may struggle to see normally for a couple of seconds if you do.
