I really don't think there is a 'standard method' I find this works consistently for me.

Great description. Sweep up from below the dring, not down from the top. It helps if the shoulder dring is slightly bent so it potrudes from the webbing. It also helps if you have a backup light secured to the same dring, it will hold the dring down, i.e. prevent it from flopping up and down.

I clip my backup light with the "gate" facing in, and my reg with the gate facing "out".
