After taking the P@*S out of a GUE standard
"Be able lay and retrieve line whilst scootering"
thinking it was clearly a typo as it
must be impossible to retrieve line 'whilst scootering' and having had my ignorance remedied on this list,

I tried it on Tuesday.
It is in fact relatively easy (and fun) as was intimated here, with the forward momentum off the diver/scooter keeping sufficient water friction on the line to keep the line under control.....if your quick!
couple of things I noticed,
- The reel had to be held correctly (line facing backward) or the line spooled in on one side of the drum much more easily than when swimming/reeling.
- Any delay in reeling in the line means it gets slack enough to get caught around stages! (which gets worse if the line isn't held out to the side or down!)
- Cylinder valves can be rolled on/off by the constant start/stopping.....

- Buddy needs to be on the ball, pulling ties ahead before you get there; things happen really fast!
All in all a fun exercise when stuck in a boring quarry.
